BURREN - OUR INHERITANCE.

This is the website of former Northern Ireland Assembly Member and District Councilor P.J. Bradley. In March 2011 the SDLP representative decided to retire from the world of elected politics. He had served continuously as an elected representative since 1981 having successfully contested all nine elections that he participated in. In 2007 when the electorate returned him to the Assembly for the third time they also gave him the highest ever vote of his political career. This was an indication of the esteem in which he was held throughout South Down and an obvious reflection of his political efforts on behalf of his appreciative constituents.

On retirement P.J. made it known that he had planned to write some form of a record of his life and times, a record of sorts about the history of his native area, his political life and on the experiences gained during his rather diverse and interesting lifetime.

As it turned out after almost six months of research and constant writing he did eventually reach ‘The End’. However the end product was not completely as envisaged and given the volume of material that he produced he made a decision to divide his work into three distinct entities.

‘Burren – Our Inheritance’ is the title he has given to the first of his trilogy of books. As the title explains it deals mainly with life around Burren and St. Mary’s Parish Burren with a number of interesting references to events in the adjoining areas of Mayobridge, Derrylecka and Ballyholland. For those with interests in rural affairs in Ireland in the nineteen forties and fifties this book will prove of value to any collection Irish material.
