Greetings from Co. Down.
Dear friends at home and overseas,
When I decided that I would retire after three decades of thorough enjoyment in the world of politics I did so with a feeling of relief but also with a degree of trepidation. I fully realized that once I removed myself from the pressures that come with a seventy to eighty-hour political working week I would also be closing many doors of opportunity. Gone would be the chances to meet new friends from the world of politics but in a way I could live with that. Away from the joys of family life my greatest concern of all was the acceptance that I might never again get the opportunity to meet up with people that meant so much to me in the past including my multitude of friends within the Irish Diaspora.

Now that I am no longer seeking the votes of the electorate I have the freedom to name drop and refer to places I have visited. I ask myself will I ever re-visit Butte Montana, Atlanta or New Orleans where I have friends in abundance. Will I meet up again with friends in Boston, Washington, New York, St. Louis, Kansas City, Newry SC, Los Alamos NM or in Ottawa? My prayer is that I will get round to saying hello again but my creator is the one that will determine what time I have left to do so.

I leave the political scene with a degree of satisfaction that as result of my stewardship I have helped many individuals and that many groupings and communities have benefited from my political input on behalf of the wider community.
